Questioned Document Examination – What Can Be Done and How It Is Done?

Mr. Kuhn will walk the group through what handwriting is, a little history, the scope of work of an examiner, images of typical documents submitted and how to evaluate/choose a Forensic Document Examiner (FDE). He will also talk about the typical training of a FDE, typical equipment used in a Forensic Document Laboratory and provide a detailed overview of the examination process, types of handwriting samples to be submitted, the opinions that can be rendered, and a slew full of images of “forgeries”, such as machine manipulations, tracings, etc. Finally, Kurt will conclude his presentation with “You Be the Expert” series where he will invite members to step in the role of a FDE.


Kurt E. Kuhn

Mr. Kuhn is a Forensic Identification Specialist with over 35 years of experience in civil and criminal casework in the fingerprint and questioned document/handwriting analysis disciplines. Mr. Kuhn maintains a well-equipped fingerprint and questioned document laboratory and reference library. He has qualified as an expert witness in the Superior Courts of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties as well as in United States District Court, United States Tax Court and United States Immigration Court.

The learning portion of the evening will qualify for 2 hours of CPE (Continuing Professional Education).

The California Club is located at 538 South Flower Street in Los Angeles. Many parking structures are located within one block of the Club, the nearest (next door) being the Westlawn Garage at 524 South Flower Street. The after 4:00PM rate at the Westlawn Garage is $8.The dress code is business casual (no denim, shorts, sneakers, etc.)
