Embezzlement Fraud Case Study presented by Jay Dawdy, CMA, CFE, Gryphon Strategies

Throughout my twenty-year history of conducting corporate fraud investigations, the most common fraud that I’ve seen occur inside of corporations and organizations involve embezzlement schemes. These frauds are often perpetrated by trusted employees of the organization that have access to or involvement in the payment functions of the firm. The purpose of this presentation will be to present a case study of an actual embezzlement scheme as well as the investigation conducted and recovery efforts that were pursued by the presenter. Through a detailed explanation of the fraud and the investigative steps taken to unravel the fraud and pursue recovery, the audience will learn how this type of fraud can occur, how the control environment (or lack thereof) failed, and how these cases can be effectively investigated and resolved. Through the use of case study, the audience will also learn valuable skills in how to detect, investigate, remediate and prevent these kinds of frauds from occurring inside their organizations.

Learning Objectives:

1) Recognizing the warning flags for embezzlement and other internal frauds
2) Conducting effective investigations
3) Learning effective recovery methods and implantation of controls to prevent future occurrences
